Train up a child in
the way he should go; And when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs
22:6
OVERVIEW OF OUR
PROGRAM:
School Philosophy
Our preschool is a ministry of Tuckston United Methodist Church to the children
and parents of the church and the surrounding community. We welcome children
from all races, faiths, and nationalities.
Our program offers a stimulating curriculum in a loving, caring Christian
environment. Children learn through “hands on” activities in which they are
allowed to mature and develop at their own pace. The curriculum is based on
developmentally appropriate learning experiences. We touch all aspects of a
child’s development: cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual.
We feel that we are partners with parents. Our goal is to fulfill each child’s
potential. Our purpose is to create an atmosphere in which children will
experience the fun of learning and enjoy their preschool experience.
The Spiritual Development of Young Children
The philosophy of the United Methodist Church
In the United Methodist Church, we share our faith in the hope that people will
claim Christianity as a way of life. We profess God’s love and share that love
in relationship with others. Young children (birth-age 5) are forming
foundations for faith development.
Program Goals
To instill in each child a positive self-concept.
To provide a Christian atmosphere in the classroom which promotes respect for
others and fosters a love of learning.
To provide for each child’s physical well being.
To help each child develop self-discipline where the child is aware of limits
and expectations, and learns to be responsible for his/her own actions.
To help each child develop the ability to problem solve and make decisions
through active involvement in the learning process.
To acquire concepts and information leading to a fuller understanding of the
immediate world.
To expand verbal communication skills.
To develop beginning reading and writing skills as well as math readiness.
To experience a sense of trust in the church as a safe and loving place where
everyone belongs.
To experience short, simple prayers.
To observe Christian atmosphere, attitudes, and behavior through adult examples.
To provide opportunities for children to interact with their friends in a
variety of enjoyable activities such as art, music, science, cooking, and
dramatic play.
To provide opportunities to develop large motor skills and coordination through
physically active play and creative movement.
To enhance and refine fine motor skills.
To work with parents, as partners, in reaching our goals.
Tuckston Learning Center Board
The
Tuckston Learning Center Board is the governing body, which is responsible for
the operation of our program. The director is accountable to the preschool
board, which is a subcommittee of the Council on Ministries. The membership
includes parents who presently have children in the program along with
representative from TUMC.
The
preschool board approves major decisions and policies. They review the budget,
class structure, curriculum and personnel. The board acts as a sounding board
for the director and staff. The preschool board may visit in your child’s
classroom from time to time to observe staff, read stories, and enjoy the
program.
